Just like alopecia and childhood cancer touch the lives of many, so did the dozens of people who donated their hair to Locks of Love last Saturday at Mount Pilchuck Elementary School, only those cutting off their ponytails will bring happiness and joy to over ten children who suffer from these childhood diseases.

After months of planning, the girls from Girl Scout Troop 40830 held their Locks of Love event and exceeded expectations through the support of the community.

The nine and 10-year old girls made and distributed fliers around town, decorated posters for the special day and even made a huge thermometer to keep track of the monetary donations that were made.
Ten future professional hairstylists from Northwest Hair Academy in Everett, donated their time and talents to help make the occasion a rousing success. Cutting off ponytails and giving the donator a free, new hairstyle brought smiles and applause.

“At Paul Mitchell schools we believe that service is the rent you pay for a room on this earth,” Jeff Camp Admissions Assistant at Northwest Hair Academy said. “It’s an amazing thing when giving comes naturally.”
Boys and girls, men and women, walked in the door all in an effort to help someone who may not be as blessed by beautiful locks of hair as they are.

Five-year-old Ashlyn Mackey had several reasons why she wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love.
“Because my sister is doing it and for the girls who don’t have any hair,” she explained.
Shireen Player, another Girl Scout Troop Leader and a Tupperware Sales Rep, donated her time and 40 percent of the sales she made that day to the event. Player ended up donating $78.
When all was said and done, the girls collected 78 ponytails and over $500.

They also dedicated the event to their principal, Trudi Spierling, who passed away on Thursday after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Northwest Hair Academy will continue to take donations for Locks of Love.
“If anyone wants to donate to Locks of Love, we’ll give them a free haircut anytime,” Camp said.

Troop 40830 will also be taking donations of ponytails or money until June 9. If you would like to donate please call Troop Leader Cassandra White at 425-377-1395.
