BOISE, Idaho. – January 26, 2012 – ALBERTSONS, a SUPERVALU company, announced the significant redesign of its signature healthy lifestyle initiative – Healthy Eaters, a popular field trip program that educates American school children about nutrition and healthy choices.  Since 2005, Albertsons stores have hosted more than 400,000 kids to educate, inspire healthy decisions and reduce childhood obesity and related health issues in the communities Albertsons serves. The curriculum was recently updated to reflect the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “MyPlate” guidelines (choosemyplate.gov) that replaced the Food Pyramid last summer.  The new Healthy Eaters field trip program mirrors healthy living curricula taught in schools and is a fun, hands-on experience that is easy to learn.

“Albertsons is a well-recognized leader in health and nutrition and our company understands the long-term importance of providing tools and knowledge that enable our customers to make healthier life decisions, " said Mike Clawson, ALBERTSONS Intermountain West Division President,  "With our Albertsons Healthy Eaters program, we are excited about the opportunity to continue educating children about the importance of nutrition so they can make decisions that enhance their health and wellness for life.”

Albertsons Healthy Eaters curriculum was developed by Albertsons corporate nutritionist, Heidi Diller, to ensure that tours excite children about healthy eating and provide kids with the right nutritional information. Children will experience interactive exercise activities throughout the hour-long tour, sample delicious and nutritious healthy food items and how to apply the lessons to their daily lives.  The tour is designed for ages pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. At the end of the tour, participants receive free samples of healthy foods and goodie bags.

“If children learn at a young age how to make the right food choices, they will be more likely to make those healthy choices throughout their lifetime,” said Diller. “With the grocery store being one of the most visited destinations in our every day lives, we have a tremendous opportunity to educate children and their families about nutrition and show them how easy it is to live healthier.”

Albertsons Healthy Eaters is offered in Idaho, Montana, Southern California, Southern Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, in cities where Albertsons are located. To schedule a field trip, check with your local Albertsons grocery store or to locate the closest store in your area, call 1-877-932-7948.  The program is ongoing and bus-funding opportunities may be available in certain locations.
